US President-elect Biden reveals key national security, foreign policy appointees

US President-elect Joe Biden announced the names of several key appointees in his administration on Monday. Among them is former secretary of state John Kerry who has been appointed as the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate.

The most significant appointment perhaps is that of Antony Blinken as Secretary of State. A former deputy secretary of state and deputy national security advisor during the Obama-Biden administration, Blinken (58 has also to foreign affairs posts on Capitol Hill.

According to a statement released by the office of the President-elect which is overseeing the transition of power, Joe Biden has appointed Alejandro Mayorkas as the Secretary of Homeland Security. If confirmed, Mayorkas would be the first immigrant to lead the Department of Homeland Security. Alejandro Mayorkas served as the deputy secretary of homeland security under the Obama administration.

Former principal deputy national security advisor to President Barack Obama and legal advisor to the National Security Council, Avril Haines has been appointed the Director of National Intellegence by US President-elect Joe Biden. Haines will be the first woman to serve as Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA upon her confirmation.

Meanwhile, Linda Thomas-Greenfield has been appointed the US Ambassador to the United Nations. A Foreign Service veteran, Greenfield was the assistant secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs during the Obama years. She has also served in diplomatic positions for the US for Liberia, Switzerland, Pakistan, Kenya, The Gambia, Nigeria, and Jamaica.

Deputy chief of staff to former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, Jake Sullivan has been appointed National Security Advisor. Sullivan also served as National Security Advisor to the then vice president Biden. In addition, Jake Sullivan also has the experience of having served as director of policy planning at the State Department during the Obama administration.

The announcement of these key appointments in the Biden-Harris administration comes days after US President-elect Joe Biden named his longtime advisor Ron Klain as his chief of staff.

Biden continues to move ahead with cabinet formation despite outgoing US President Donald Trump’s refusal to concede defeat.
