VIRAL alert: This picture of a flower is all of a sudden getting 90 million hits daily from India, here’s why

An image of a flower is all of a sudden getting 90 million hits each day and all these hits are fromIndia It appears that the Wikipedia picture of a aster has actually ended up being a hit in India and it has something to do with the federal government’s choice to prohibit TikTok restriction in India.

The image is hosted on Wikimedia Commons, which is an online repository of free-use images. The image is of a purple flower that is frequently discovered in northeast America.

A post on Phabricator reveals that the the image gets about 90 million hits daily from various ISPs in India.

Chris Albon, director of Machine Learning at Wikimedia, tweeted about the rise onTuesday “Check out this actual, live ticket about an ongoing mystery. 20% of all requests to one of our data centers for media are for this image of a flower,” he composed.

“Nobody knows why,” Albon included.

The Phabricator post considered the abrupt spike in traffic as “very strange”, composing: “These are very strange, as they come from wildly different IPs, follow a daily traffic pattern, so we are hypothesising there is some mobile app predominantly used in India that hotlinks the above image for e.g. a splash screen.”

Interestingly, a chart of pageviews reveals that prior to June 8, the views on the flower was just a few hundred views daily. According to The Vice, the numbers leapt to 2,154 on June 9 and by June 30 the variety of hits on this particulr image leapt to over 15 million each day.
