New Zealand mosques attacker single-handedly carried out shooting: Police

New Zealand Police on Sunday said that 28-year-old Brenton Harrison Tarrant single-handedly carried out attacks at the two mosques in Christchurch. The police also said that the attacker carried out the attack under a span of 36 minutes during the ongoing Friday prayers for which a large number of faithful had congregated.

Earlier, it was reported that two gunmen carried out the New Zealand mosques shooting in Christchurch on Friday (March 15. The police had also detained four people in connection with the mosques mass killings.

While one of the detained persons has been charged with a separate offence and remanded in custody, another has been released. The police have also taken another person into custody. “There is no information to suggest this person is linked to the attacks,” they said.

The New Zealand Police on Sunday tweeted that the mosques across the country are free to open their doors if they choose to do so. “Police will continue to maintain a presence at all Mosques across New Zealand,” they tweeted on Sunday.

Mosques across the country were advised to shut down following the March 15 terror attack, which shook the global community.

“Police understands the religious duty of the Islamic faith to bury the deceased as soon as possible, and is working closely with the Chief Coroner to do everything possible to expedite the process,” they added, mentioning that the victims have been removed from both the Christchurch mosques.
